7 weeks ago we set out to renovate our house in 3.5 weeks. Obviously, we didn’t get the timeline quite right. If you have been through a renovation you know what I mean! Everything takes longer, everything costs more, and most everything ends up being more work than you thought.
Why then with risks like these, do people continue to involve themselves in renovation projects? Because it is AMAZING to take a house that looks like nothing, and turn into a home that looks amazing!
For me, this home renovation has been the ultimate expression of creativity. There have been creative problems to solve from day one, and I love it!
That doesn’t mean we haven’t had our troubles — we have — but I think Andrew and I have done a pretty great job of keeping ourselves cool, calm, and collected.
I imagine that some of you are in the process of renovating, about to start renovating, or considering a renovation and I have a 5 tips that will help keep you from losing your mind through the process!
1. Be Adaptable
Here’s the truth — there will be moment where you have to change your plans. Maybe you can’t move a wall you thought you could move, or something you thought was easy is actually expensive. Things come up, and you need to be adaptable! Don’t fall to pieces when plans change. Find the next best option and keep it moving!
2. Be Patient
This one is the hardest for me! I hate being patient. I want things to be done and I want them done yesterday! This attitude will get you nowhere in a renovation. In fact, an attitude like that will drive you absolutely crazy because you’ll feel helpless! Instead, take a deep breath and just relax. It takes as long as it takes, and you being frustrated never speeds things along. Plus, you’ll enjoy the journey a whole lot more if you just CHILL OUT!
3. Be Organized
This one is more for you DIY renovators, but be organized! Get a good idea of your schedule and have all your ducks in a row. Get your paint colors, tile choices, and other finishes lined up before it’s time to go. Another way to be organized — stay on top of your budget! For goodness sakes, create a renovation spreadsheet and keep track of every penny! Andrew and I know to the penny what we have spent on this renovation and it has really helped our stress levels!
4. Be Willing
This one goes two ways. First, be willing to roll up your sleeves and work hard if it’s required OR be willing to hire someone to do the work. Can I just say, there are times when it’s better to buy vs DIY (read about that here), and home renovations are certainly one of those times. It may mean you can’t do as much, but it will also mean that the work you do get done will be better!
5. Find Somewhere Else to Live
Maybe the most important thing on this list. Whatever you have to do, do it to make sure you don’t have to live in your renovation site. There is something so nice about leaving the construction zone to come back to a clean, cozy bed. Don’t try to rough it, it’s not worth it! Find a friend, a family member, or a hotel to accommodate you while you are renovating. Trust me on this one — it will make EVERYTHING feel so much better!
I hope this helps you with all your renovation dreams and goals! Now go forth and conquer!
