I usually start out telling you what week of renovation we are on, but I can’t even remember. I don’t even want to know I just want this project to be done! We are on the home stretch though. Tile, painting, and finishing touches happen in the next two weeks, so maybe we’ll be in by late September? Everyone cross your fingers and toes.
Today I want to show you The Den! This room is right off the kitchen and the sunroom. Here’s what it looked like when we bought it.
It has a general brown and beige cast to it, don’t you think? This room has been deemed the TV room and most likely our main living space.
This room connects to the Entry Way, the Kitchen, and the Sunroom. That’s a lot of connection points! Basically it means this room is an area of high traffic. The small doorways didn’t really help either. The kitchen door was itty bitty, so that was a no brainer to open up, but we went back and forth on opening up the Entry Way walkthrough.
We ended up removing two closets from the Entry Way so we could have a bigger Entry AND a much larger cased entry into our Den. It’s been on of those decisions that we weren’t sure was necessary, but in the end we are so glad we did it!
This room has seen a lot of work! There was no drywall behind any of that wood paneling, so all new drywall had to be added.
We also did a new “built-in” for the wall beside the fireplace. That’s actually a Home Depot kitchen cabinet that we repurposed into a built in for under our TV.
And the biggest update to this room has been the floors. This room was the only room in the house with hardwoods under the carpets. They were in great condition, too!
We had every intention of keeping these floors, but we ran into a problem with the floor level. No idea why, but these hardwoods were set at the same height as the subfloor. Basically that means any flooring we put in the Kitchen or Entry would be 3/4in higher than these floors. We would have had to put thick transition pieces all over this room.
The only real options were to lower the floors in every other room in the house ($$$) OR put the new floors on top of the old ones. We opted for option number two, so now we have floors going straight from the Den into the Kitchen.
What’s left for this room is paint and few finishing touches of electric and trim. We are painting the fireplace white and I think I’ll do gray walls with white trim. For the built in, I am thinking of matching the black color of the kitchen cabinets, but Andrew thinks I should go more neutral.
I’d love to know your thoughts! Thanks for tuning into this Renovation Progress post! Let me know what you think so far!
