Did you ever watch the TLC show “Trading Spaces”? I LOVED it! Vern and Genevieve were of course my favorites, and while I applauded Frank’s personality I could never get behind his designs. And don’t even get me started on Hildi. We all remember the infamous silk flowers as a wall treatment. Didn’t she do something with straw, too? I digress.
Last Fall I found myself desperately wanting to trade spaces with anyone who had a better bedroom than what we had. And really, it wouldn’t have been hard to find some qualifiers, because this was a low point for this bedroom. I didn’t even bother to tidy up before I took pictures — this is how dire the situation had become!
Although the bedroom received new paint, new floors, and crown molding when we moved in, it was NOT coming together. I started to hate the color I chose a few months in, and with our cream bed, cream rug, cream bedspread, and the same height furniture all around the room it looked really drab.
I mean, really drab. You can only go up from here, guys. We also used bed comforters as curtains. I think that’s when I hit my low point. My goal was to make this a cozy room I wanted to spend time in. To do that we needed to change the color palette (why is everything I own cream??), and add in some wood tones.
I ended up switching beds from our guest room and putting the four-poster in here. Wood for the win! I also found a black armoire from Craigslist. It’s from the 1950s and it’s not really in that great of shape, but I love it. It adds great height and putting clothes away on shelves is much faster than opening drawers. Who even has time to open drawers anymore?
By far the biggest change was the wallpaper. I’m so lucky that my friends at Brewster Home Fashions helped me with this project! If you have read my blog at all, then you know how much I adore wallpaper, and also adore Brewster! They helped me with my Entry way and dining Room They have the largest stock of wallpaper at really great prices, and if you order now through March you get 30% off with the code “UrbanAcres”. Take them up on that deal if you are considering wallpaper! Commercial over.
I chose a subtle pattern, their Blythe Toile. The gray is just a little lighter than the original paint color and what a difference it’s made in this room!
Lastly, the curtains!! It only took us a year, but we FINALLY put curtains up in our bedroom and I think these are great. These are black-out curtains by Eclipse and they really do the job! Our bedroom receives quite a bit of morning sun, and since we face the street we also get a lot of headlights in our room at night. I never felt comfortable in our room at night because I felt like you could see through the duvets (which are not meant to be curtains, duh), but I feel no such hesitation with these curtains. They are wonderful!
They come in a huge variety of colors/patterns and lengths. You can find them online at overstock or at your local Target! Or do what I did, buy a sample curtain from Target to test your color and then order the length you want online.
And now it’s the type of room you want to spend time with your puppy in, which is really all you need from a bedroom 😉 I hope this inspires you to do something awesome in your own bedroom! Go forth and redecorate!
